Urology

Urology is a surgical medical science that deals with the urinary tracts and organs of men and women and the male reproductive organs and deals with the diseases of these systems.

In addition, the surgical treatment of the adrenal glands falls within the field of urology. Urology deals with both adult and pediatric patients.

Among the diseases encountered in urology practice: urinary tract obstruction, prostate enlargement, impotence, infertility, urinary incontinence, kidney and urinary tract stones; kidney, bladder, prostate and ovarian cancers have an important place. Other common diseases that urologists treat are urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases and injuries of urological organs.

In addition, some congenital diseases of boys are also in the field of interest of urology. These include undescended testis (the egg does not descend into the bag), hydrocele (water bladder in the bag), and the urinary opening in the wrong place (hypospadias and epispadias). Bedwetting at night, leakage of urine from the bladder to the kidney, all diseases of the foreskin and circumcision operation are also included in the field of urology.

In addition of surgical operations, urology also performs closed surgeries based on modern technological methods such as endoscopy and laparoscopy.

Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA): This examination provides information about both the diagnosis and the course of treatment. PSA is a protein produced by prostate gland cells. In cases with prostate cancer, the level of PSA in the blood may increase. The higher the blood PSA level, the higher the probability that the person will have prostate cancer. After the age of 40, every man should have a PSA examination once a year.

Uroflowmetry: It is a very valuable examination in which the urine flow is displayed graphically.

Ultrasonography: This examination is important in terms of showing the size of the prostate and residual urine remaining in the urinary bladder.

Cystoscopy: In cystoscopy, the urinary canal and the bladder are looked at with a lighted instrument inserted through the urethra. In addition to prostate enlargement, it also shows other pathologies such as strictures. It is checked whether there is a tumor in the bladder. In addition, with this procedure, a catheter can be placed and removed in the urinary tract (ureter) between the kidney and the bladder.

Stone Breaking (ESWL): Kidney stones that could only be removed by open surgery until recently, can be easily broken up with shock waves sent from outside the body on the stone, painlessly and without anesthesia, with the ESWL (lithotripsy breaking with external shock waves) device developed by modern technology. Moreover, at the end of the session, the patient can go home on foot and continue his daily life.
